Marrakech Vacation Guide

Getting Around Marrakech

Marrakech has various means of transport, although the only way you can visit the medina, is by foot.

In Marrakech, the medina, walking is your sole option for getting about. Only motorcycles and bicycles are allowed in several of the old center’s small streets. Because of their high speeds, motorcycles and scooters pose a serious threat, so be careful.

Getting your bearings around the medina could be a bit of a challenge given the absence of comprehensive maps. The fact that the street names vary from the nameplates makes things much more confused, as you can see on a map.

Finding your way about is as simple as asking the front desk clerk at your riad for directions before you leave, or you can just cross your fingers and hope for the best. It is common practice in the medina for anybody you ask for directions to follow you before asking for a gratuity, which they will likely complain is insufficient.

Public transportation

You may want to consider taking a cab or walking instead than using the Marrakech municipal buses, which are notoriously overcrowded and somewhat outdated.

Taxis

In Marrakech, you may find both large taxis (the “grand taxi“) and smaller ones (the “petit taxis“). In the downtown area, you may find the smaller cabs. For faraway adventures, go for the bigger ones.

While every Marrakech cab has a taximeter, drivers often “forget” to turn it on. Make sure they turn it on before you get in; if they won’t, look for another cab. If that doesn’t work, you can always haggle over the fare with the driver before you even get in the car.

It will cost you 30 dh (about $3.) to 50 dh (about $5.10) to go around Marrakech’s central district.

Another option is to book a driver with a car ( Book Here ) for the whole day and travel a few hours outside of Marrakech to see the Ouzoud Falls or the city of Essaouira.

Carriages pulled by horses in Marrakech

You must ride in a horse-drawn carriage  at least once during your visit since it is one of the most authentic ways to see the city.
