Ben Youssef Madrasa in Marrakech
The Ben Youssef Madrasa was the largest and most important Islamic school in Marrakech and Morocco.
What is a madrasa?
You may not be familiar with the term “madrasa” if you have never been to a nation that is mostly Muslim like Morocco. A madrasa is a kind of Islamic school that focuses on religious studies and other related subjects.
In order to accommodate the pupils who visited the Ben Youssef Mosque, which is situated in close proximity to the madrasa, the school was constructed.
The largest madrasa in Morocco
Ben Youssef Madrasa is not only the most prominent Islamic institution in Morocco, but it is also the biggest Islamic college in the country. The structure was first established in the fourteenth century, and Abdallah al-Ghalib was the one who commissioned its reconstruction in the year 1565. It serves as a home for more than 900 pupils and includes more than 130 rooms.
The gorgeous indoor patio of the madrasa is the most notable feature of the building. In addition, you will have a wonderful time exploring the empty dormitory cells that were traditionally used by the students.
Closed for reforms
The Ben Youssef Madrasa will be closed for renovation works until the middle of 2020.
